The Women’s Haven of Fort Worth

The Women’s Haven in Fort Worth began while Barry was working with his very good friend, Congressman Jim Wright.

“We’d learned women were not leaving their homes when they were being beaten up by their husbands. We found a home on the East side of Fort Worth that would be the beginning for what we called the Fort Worth Women’s Haven. I gathered the money and bought the home. Congressman Jim Wright and I would get together and call city leaders to meet about this need. We asked the leaders to write checks to start the program.

In the house we kept a fully stocked kitchen, a yard to play in for the children, and a place for the children & mothers to stay. No husband would be allowed to go onto the property– any offenders who came onto the property would be arrested immediately. We selected a director of the home who would live there, a female, who was paid. The women needed so much help. Help included making doctors available. Calling people to contribute or to become a part of the support system that was being created, was the important groundwork.”
