Doing the Right Thing

“In the local community fighting was dominant in the culture. I did not want to fight, but I recall my mother’s half-brother, uncle Leroy Barker, was killed stepping in to defend a Black man who was being threatened by knife by a white man, a town bully. The Black man had not spoken in a way that the white man approved and Leroy, a twenty year old, lost his life in this fight.”
